What does the feminine name Avenel / Avanel mean? It could be French or English and was used at the time of the Crusades...

Miss Claire.....my grandmother's middle name is Avonelle. She was born in Kentucky in the early 20's. Her father was the one who got to name her as she was born on his birthday. I've always loved the name.

i found a site saying it is French and it is masculine and that it means 'lives near the oatfield'. Well, before that i checked a Latin dictionary and found the Latin word avena , which means 'oat', so i think this meaning is most likely to be true. although, where the 'lives near' part comes from, i can't find in the word, but probably the names literally means 'oatfield' and figurally it is meant that the person bearing this name lived near an oatfield.
