Really? Didn't know that. Need to bone up on my Jane Austen ;) That's interesting, because in the movie Paint Your Wagon (which I still haven't seen!)there's a song called "They Call the Wind Maria" and it's pronounced Mariah. Still people used to sing it to me when I was a little girl.

Austen wasn't the only one.As far as I know, mar-EYE-ah was the standard English pronounciation in her time and before. In Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, the character Maria's name is pronounced just like Mariah.Array
