My dictionary says that august means dignified and splendid: full of solemn splendor and dignity (formal).
Personally I love August for a girl.
I love Peter but you should think carefully in case your family ends up always relating Peter to your sister's ex. As for the slang assoisation well that is enough to put you off the name.
