[Opinions] Dax
Wdyt of the name Dax for a boy? I took a look at the comments and realised to my horror it's got some connection to Star Trek ... not a good thing in my book! I'm not sure how strong an association that is since I've never watched Star Trek, so if anyone can tell me, that'd be great. What would you think of Dax and Stellan for brothers? Dax and Gideon? The combo Dax Nathaniel? Thanks in advance.

Dax and Star TrekJadzia and Ezri Dax were two main characters in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. They were not family, but rather Trill who both served as hosts (one after the other) to a symbiont named Dax. After joining with a symbiont, Trills take the name of their symbiont as a surname. I don't believe Jadzia's birth surname was ever revealed, but Ezri was called Ezri Tigan before being joined.Memory Alpha's articles:
Jadzia Dax: http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Jadzia_Dax
Ezri Dax: http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Ezri_Dax
Dax symbiont: http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Dax_%28symbiont%29Besides the ST reference, Dax just sounds generically very sci-fi and trendily macho to me. So it's nmsaa.

I've seen tons of Star Trek episodes in my short lifetime, but the name doesn't ring a bell.Dax isn't my style, but it is very strong sounding. In the same way that Max is, I suppose.I like Dax and Stellan together, as well as Dax Nathaniel.

It's not Star Trek, it's Star Wars... in The Empire Strikes Back, Dax is the gunner in a ship of some kind with the main character Luke, and he gets killed. Not a memorable character, but that's who I immediately thought of when you say "Dax".

Dax seems nickname-y to me, but I still think it's quite cool. :) Maybe it could work as a nn for Dashiell? (Though I think I prefer Dash to Dax...) I love Stellan and Gideon, and actually I'd rather see those 2 names on brothers than either one with Dax. :b But it could still definitely work. We had a baby at work recently named Dax Michael. At the time we also had a baby boy named Maximus, and a co-worker joked that Dax Lastname and Maximus Lastname should form a band. :b Dax doesn't make me think of "Star Trek" in the least (I have the same feelings about it as you do, it seems. LOL.). The only 'famous' Dax I know of is Dax Shepherd, who was recently in the movies "Employee of the Month" and "Let's Go to Prison" (he was also on "Punk'd" with Ashton Kutcher). He's not an Oscar winner, lol, but he wouldn't necessarily deter me from liking the name, either. :)
(BTW, his real name is Dax, and his mn is Randall...just a tidbit from imdb.com)

My bossHis name is Dax, I think its gorgeous (as is he! lol). I didn't know it was from star wars, so I dont think the connotation is strong.
My boss' name is Dax Anne and he has sisters Bianca and Felicity (i think).
Dax, Stellan and Gideon are gorgeous together. Dax Nathaniel is lovely too.Other combo's i've thought of:
Dax Noble
Dax Apollo
Dax Orion
Dax Emmanuel
Dax Harper
Dax Gabriel
Dax Nikolai
Dax Horatio (even though I dont like Horatio)
Dax Leopold
Dax Everett

I really like Dax : )It's spunky and sharp without the trendy feel imo.Dax & Stellan would sound good as brothers. I'm not as keen about Dax & Gideon together though. And the combo Dax Nathaniel is very nice : )I also like the similar names Dex, Daz & Dez. A couple of other similar ones are Dux & Dack.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dax

Even if it does conjure up ST memories, what's wrong with using it? I could name my kid something that could be from a movie/tv show I had never seen and I am sure the child would be ok. :)

I'm a real Star Trek fan (don't laugh at me please) and the first thing I thought when I saw that name was Jadzia Dax. So I guess the connection in obvious if you've seen Deep Space Nine and I don't think I'm the only one who did. I wouldn't use it.

I know absolutely nothing about Star Trek, but as soon I first saw this name, some while back, I thought "science fiction name." It just doesn't sound like a name for an actual human being.

Dax feels so NNy to me. I know it's not, but it just feels unfinished. It's like Max or Leo -- they're fine on their own, but I don't like them that way personally.Dax Nathaniel flows well. I like Dax and Gideon together better than Dax and Stellan, but I prefer Stella and Gideon without Dax best.

How about Stellan and Gideon?? I don't mind Dax it is not a horrible name. It is just not my style I guess. But if you were gonna to choose Dax I would say Dax and Gideon would go better together IMO.

To me the ST association is no problem. Dax is a neat name. Your mixations with the other names are fine. People will say it's a "weird" name because it's short and unfamiliar, but whatev. If you can put up with that, and I could, there's no problem.

Dax...Sounds like:Tax
Tacks
Fax
Ducks
Dash
Daft
etc.I would say I don't like Dax at all.

According to 50,0001 Best Baby Names:
Dax (french) unique; water-loving Dacks, Daxie
Stellan (swedish) star
Gideon (hebrew) power-wielding Giddy, Gideone, Gidion, GidyunDax is really my style...I've never seen Star Trek. For Brothers: Stellan & Dax are cute together but Dax seems very nicknamey. Gideon & Dax work well together for brothers but Dax is still kinda nicknamey. Dax Nathaniel ~ sounds really good together.

I far prefer Dex, and as a nn for Dexter (as in "Doggone it, C.K. Dexter Haven!"), but Dax isn't horrible. I think it sounds great with Gideon and Stellan, but Dax Nathaniel isn't quite doing it for me.I've never watched Star Trek, either, so I don't have that association. If Dax is a major character, he's at least not as culturally relevant as, say, Khan (KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!), so all us non-ST kids won't know 'im.Array

I like Dax and Stellan. Different and seem to "match".
I wouldn't associate it with Star Trek. I grew up with someone named Dax. I would guess he is about 26 now.
