[Surname] Vollmer?
Does anyone know where the name Vollmer originates?

As a German surname, VOLLMER can have two origins:
1. Contracted form of VOLKMAR
2. Short for VOLLMEIER. It is related to the various spellings of Meier, Meyer, Maier, Mayer. This refers originally to a farm-bailiff, and later to the tenant of a farm. (The name is from Latin "maior domus", "master of the house".) Now there was a HALBMEIER, in charge of half a farm, and VOLLMEIER, taking care of a whole farm.
