This is one "word" name that, if it wasn't taken colloquially to be a word, I'd adore it.. but the word wrecks it for me; the word makes it sort of country-synthetic to me, like Shyanne. It seems like the sort of name that'd be adopted by a guy who was putting on an image. That's really unfortunate since the name itself sounds and looks great.
If I recall correctly, the word "maverick" actually does derive from a surname, which apparently doesn't mean the same thing as the word. The word meaning comes from a bearer of the name (Texas rancher who didn't brand, leading to unbranded cattle being called mavericks, leading to the colloquial word).
I don't know what the name means, though.
Anyway, since I'm a huge fan of both M and -rick, this name would be a big fave of mine if not for the ranching and rebellious references. They turn me off it bigtime.
