[Facts] A Name that Really is Missing
Ok now here's a name that really is missing from this site: Odessa.
It's a feminine name that I always thought was Russian but have found out is Greek and means "a long journey." It's a lovely name and needs to be added.

Odyssey, meaning "a long journey" is obviously derived from the name Odysseus (Ulysses in latin). Homer himself associates the name with the verb "odyssomai" meaning "to become angered, hateful". Note that the first "y" in Odysseus (as well as osyssomai) is the letter upsilon (Õ).
Odessa in Greek is "Odessos", the "e" being the letter eta (H). This importasnt difference (Y in Odyssey vs H in Odessa) makes it unlikely that the two are connected. According to one source (G. Babiniotis, Hellenic Lexicon), "Odessa" bears unkown proto-hellenic etymology. I strongly suspect however that Odessa is related to the word "Odos", meaning "journey, voyage". This fits in with the fact that Odessa was an imortant port throughout its history. And paradoxically supports Raven 's definition.

The Odyssey
If you have a fancy for that name and are intrigued by it's meaning then fail not to take a look at Homer 's immortal classic:
THE ODYSSEY

Odessa was the name the nazis gave to their secret plans on escaping Germany after the war. Not only did it contain escape routes, but names of people in other countries to help out. A book was written about it called "The Odessa files".
Yeah ok people chill out. I was just happy to find out what my grandmother's middle name meant and where it originated.
Hey, didn't Ira Levin write a novel about you and your sibling clones?
*The Bores from Brazil*
*The Bores from Brazil*
ROTFL!!!
Soem of the clones who didnt make it to Brazil went on to form the black metal group Corvus Corax (Raven ), complete with Nazi sympathies :PPP (http://www.metal-observer.de/gb/interviews/intcc.html)

Oh yeah, this figures...
From http://www.metal-observer.de/gb/interviews/intcc.html
"...there is no previous musical experience for those in CORVUS CORAX, unless adolescent Punk Rock-expression can be considered music. Similarly, we for the most part do not have any institutional or technical musical training. It is something I intended to harness, but there is only so much time."
To re-phrase...
"...there is no previous message board experience for Raven, unless adolescent defensiveness and antagonistic expression can be considered communicating. Similarly, she for the most part does not have any institutional or home-based socialization training. It is something she intends to harness, but there is only so much time."

So your granny made it all the way from Berlin to Georgia unscathed?
Yep, spot-on, Phyllis. In fact, Pavlos posted about that right at the start of this thread: "I strongly suspect however that Odessa is related to the word "Odos", meaning "journey, voyage". This fits in with the fact that Odessa was an imortant port throughout its history. And paradoxically supports Raven's definition."
For the record, this was one of the compliments paid to Raven in the beginning which Raven claimed in another posting was "false". You'll notice that Raven also didn't appreciate the honest discussion brought on by the name of "Odessa" earlier up in this thread, and her rather rude response to everyone (including Selwyn who, as you know, is probably the sweetest person on this message board) was: "Yeah ok people chill out..."
"Chill out" from WHAT? Nobody was dogging her out or anything back at the start -- they were talking about the *name*, for freak's sake! Raven doesn't seem to understand that this is a *discussion* board about names.
Eh, some people are just so buttheaded that there's no getting through to 'em. Since Raven is so convinced that our props to her in the beginning were insincere, now she can have our most sincere ridicule of her. :)
