Zissel and Zane
I read somewhere that the Yiddish name Zissel (my mother's Jewish name) could be both feminine and masculine. Is this correct?
Also I read that Zane can be a Yiddish name used as a form of Samuel or Schmuel. Is that true?

I found the answer!!!!!I found someting. I found on a website that the name Zane is Samuel in yiddish. (Forget about my other post). And guess what. I did find information on the femine name Zissel. Heres's the site. And yes, the name Zissel is both male and feminine. On the website they gave me a list of masculine names and a list of feminine names. The name Zissel was on both. Here's the site to find all this information on. Once you get there, go down to the bottom of the page where you see 2 pictures of people dancing. Under the 1 picture, you'll see "Feminine Yiddish names" and under the other one, you'll see "Masculine Yiddish names." Just click on it. Here's the site,http://www.hebrewletters.com/results.cfm?catid2=1426Oh ya. I have a question. One country are you from if you're yiddish?

OT: YiddishYiddish is a language, not an ethnicity. It is primarily related to German, and also has words derived from Hebrew, Aramaic, various Slavic languages, Old French and Old Italian.Yiddish has been spoken by Ashkenazic Jews of Central and Eastern Europe since the early middle ages. It's not commonly used these days, especially after most of the speakers were killed in the Holocaust. However, it is still spoken in some Jewish families in different parts of the world, and English has quite a few loan words from Yiddish. You may be familiar with the words kvetch (complain), mazl-tov (congratulations), mensch (gentleman), nosh (food), meshugina (crazy person), or shtick (routine).~ Cait

I just looked up the name Zane on another name website and it said that the name Zane is a source of the name John. The name Zane is English. The name means "God's Grace." However, not all name experts believe that. Some name experts believe that the name Zane is as a Danish Surname unrelated to John. Anyways, I did find a little information on the name Zissel. Except, the website I found it on, spelt it Zisel and it was hebrew and feminine. It also meant Sweet. I'm still searching so you might see another post from me.

Zisel is Yiddish, not Hebrew. :)Claire

I think that Zissel could be for both sexes, but I've only seen him on girls. More common boy forms would be Suskind, Zusman, Sus...Check here:

Example: Shmuel Zissel.I had never heard of Zane as a Yiddish name, but I've just found that: http://www.hebrewletters.com/item.cfm?itemid=3358I hope it helps!Claire (Rahel Behira) :) :) :)
