Franz
I suddenly find myself enamored. All these composers... Haydn, Schubert, von Suppé, Lehar, Liszt. Not to mention Mozart had a son named Franz Xaver. There must be something to this name. Adding to PNL this instant. I think this one may have spontaneously become my number 1 for a male.

I think of Franz from Coppelia, the ballet. It's ok, but I wouldn't use it.

and Kafkawow I never realised quite how prestigious this name was (although I'll ignore the fate of Franz Ferdinand). What great associations for a child, and I definitely prefer it to the slightly sappy sounding Francis, the z gives it much more of an edge.It probably wouldn't work here though since there's an indie band called Franz Ferdinand monopolising the name. (they are good though)

My hometown is a place called Franz Josef, so for me Franz is completely useable as a person name. My brain just won't even let it be a name lol. Sorry that probably wasn't very helpful! I don't think a kid would hassled for it really, it's kinda cool IMO.

I find it attractive, but not enough so that I could convince myself to put it on my PNL or anything like that. It has a very dated feel to me, as well as being *so* reminiscent of all the individuals you mentioned.

This is one of the few names that I can see a child being tormented aboutI can't see it flying at all - despite it's popularity on the board.

What is it about this name that would encourage hardship in this day in age?

I like Franz, it is uncommon (where I come from at least), and despite actually being quite an old name, would sound quite modern and fresh on a child born today.
