I have an uncle ButchBut I don't care for the name at all. His name is actually... Edwin something and he's had the nn Butch since he was born. Makes me think of a big dog, not a person.

As a nickname its fine but not as a given name unless the one so named is a dog

I know a guy named Butch. Its a nickname but its what he goes by all the time. I can't even remember his given name at the moment. I don't think I'd use it, but I don't have awful associations because of the Butch I know.

That's horrible! I think its a dog name and a bad one at that!

Butch would be an okay nickname--like Buddy or Buster or Stud or Dude. As a full name, though? He'll have no choice but to grow up to be a mechanic or a gas station owner. ;) It's not something I'd ever recommend as a full name for a child.Array
