West
I've been catching up on HEROES on netflix. I just started season 2 last night and there is a character named West. This use to be one of my favorites but at the time I was torn between West and Wesley - Wesley eventually took the win but actually seeing West in use has opened me up to it again. So do you think it works as a name on it's own? And of the two (West and Wesley) which do you prefer? (Wesley would probably end up going exclusively by Wes anyway)

There's always Westley. I think West works as a name on its own. It's probably the only directional name that can do so, except for maybe North. But it's also a fine nickname for Wesley or Westley.

I would pick Wesley. West doesn't really sound like a name.

I love the name West, and much prefer it over Wesley.

I think it works well as a middle name, not sure about first name. I prefer West to Wesley, however. Personally, I like West as a girl's middle name. Nadia West used to be one of my favourite combos.

I love direction names :)I love West. I also like Westley, with a "T", like in the princess bride. West would be a cute NN for Westley.I like Wesley too, but I prefer West and Westley.

I've never liked Wesley, but I like West. I know a boy named West (it's not a nn). I like Westley and Weston better than Wesley, but West works on it's own too.

A guy who used to live down the street from me was named Westley. He would sometimes be called West. I prefer that over Wesley, because the latter just seems whiny and nerdy to me. It's too soft for me to really enjoy. That may be because I met Westley when I was fairly young--before I knew of Wesley--so when I finally heard Wesley, I didn't like it. So I like Westley better and don't think of it as contrived.

I can't detach Wesley from the irritating Star Trek character, and it has a certain whining quality to it. I vastly prefer West, which I think is pretty nice and can stand on it's own or be short for Weston (I don't care for Westley either). Also, I'm pretty sure David Duchovny's daughter is named West. Don't know if that helps or hurts your opinion of the name.

I like West better. I also really like the name Weston.

I love West and Westley! I don't like Wesley nearly as much. I think West is fine on its own, although if I saw it IRL I might think it was short for Weston (which I also like).

I met a little boy named Westley once...I prefer Wesley "Wes", I don't like West.

I prefer Wesley over West. But couldn't you go with Westley and get the best of both worlds??

I do like Westley but was afraid it may seem too "contrived" and could create undue confusion as most would probably just hear it as Wesley
