Reason I postedI have a 4th cousin from Australia and her name is Maria. I have also seen the name Maree in really distant family trees

I don't get taking one of the most common names worldwide and spelling it differently. Still, it appeals to some. One of my girls went to school with a girl whose mn was Maree and I read somewhere that Martina McBride's mn is Mariea. At least they're in the middle. Reminds me of another little girl in my dd's class who was named Carliea.

I'd think someone tried to get creative w/ Maria's spelling... My first thought was that of banging my head against a wall.

I'd think, "Maria's gone wacky." If they really want something other than Maria, why not Mariya?

I've never seen it before! I'd just assume someone wanted to name their kid ma-REE-a without naming them Maria. I suppose I don't have a feel for Australian trends...

I'd think what's wrong with Maria?

You're onto something, it does seem a little Australian. Don't know why, but that's not a bad thing.X
