Opinions on Emmett? My friend just had a baby and this is what she named him.

I recently posted on the Facts board with a question of Evelyn and was surprised to discover that both Evelyn & Emmett are historically female names. (Evelyn is a diminutive of Eve, Emmett a diminutive of Emma.) The names survived as surnames, which were then passed on to males, becoming male names. Evelyn has switched back, Emmett hasn't.Anyway: I'm not really a fan of Emmett. It's not a horrible name but it's just not my style.

Little Emma, eh? Seems odd, but as long as she doesn't dress him in pink and buy him a Barbie, no harm will come of it.

What? Why would buying that be harmful and why "little Emma"?

Emmett: From an English surname which was derived from a diminutive of the feminine given name EMMA.That would be the why of "little Emma."

I don't love it, but I don't hate it either.

It's a solid choice. I've known little boys and old men named Emmett and it is one that grows up well. It's not a name I would choose for my child, but I like it for others.
