My two least favorite names! I dislike Ian less.

I prefer Ian. I like Liam as well, but I still think of it as only a nickname for William, so it seems a bit odd to me as a full name.

IanI've always liked it quite a bit. I think it seems intelligent.Liam is ok, but has gotten quite common which puts me off it.

I like Ian enormously and would have considered it seriously (actually, left to myself I'd have used it) for my son, but my SIL had just divorced an excellent Ian so this seemed tactless and I didn't. I find it difficult to assess it as a name, as all the Ians I've ever known have been wonderful people, with one exception and he was merely bland.Liam, as I have said before on these boards so bear with me, reminds me of obese Irish long-distance truck drivers with the cabin full of pizza boxes, coffee mugs and Guinness bottles. Liam wears a vest (in Europe! Stateside, he wears a singlet I think) and denims that display his ample rump; he explains his idleness about personal hygiene as designer stubble. I could go on about his taste in music, but I won't. Liam is an un-name, fit only for something out of a horror story that rises out of the plughole of the kitchen sink and spreads toxins and terror.

LOL, love your second paragraph.

I'm going to go for Ian but I'm not a fan of either. They're not awful names, they just sound I don't know, a bit inconsistent for some reason.

Liam. It has a nice sound it is just way too common. Ian doesn't sound so nice to me and it seems a bit dated.

Both are a bit dated in the UK, but Ian is more so. I prefer it to Liam though.

I like Liam much more. I know it isn't a board favourite here but having grown up in an Irish family where it was used before it was trendy, it has always sounded sturdy and friendly to me. I think it could have become a favourite of mine had it not become so widely used.Ian has always sounded nasally and nerdy to me. Objectively there is nothing wrong with it but I definitely don't see the appeal.
