Ian or Ethan...
You have to give one of these names to your son. CHOOSE. "And by the way, dearie, your punctuation sucks canal water!"

IanIt feels more timeless to me, and I've known too many Ethans.

Assuming I didn't already have John I would choose Ian. Neither is to my taste, but I hate that EETH.

EthanIan's dreary and dull, Ethan has energy, and I prefer how it sounds.

EthanBoth are fine but I have a cousin called Ian, so I will opt for Ethan.

IanBecause would be very hard to pronounce where I live, and I've never liked the name. I've never understood why it's so popular.
Ian is a lovely name though and easy to pronounce in different parts of the world.

I've already chosen. I really wanted to name my son Ian, but since DH's sister had just divorced a very nice Ian, silly woman, this would have been tactless so I didn't.Ethan doesn't happen where I live. I've never met, seen or heard of one. And that long, whiney Eeeeeee at the beginning and the trendi-Wendi -an ending are not a happy combo.Of course, Ian also ends in -an and starts with an Ee! But that's different!

Ian... Ethan is whiny and overused IMHO whereas Ian is fresher and more interesting.

Ian.Ethan annoys me. I've known several Ians and liked them, the only Ethan I knew was annoying

Ethan hands down. It's always been one of my favorite names. I don't know why I like it so much more than Ian.

Urgh. Ian is totally an old man in a manky cardigan with giant sprouty ear hairs. But Ethan is so very annoying! And poor old Ian might be a nice old thing, ear hairs notwithstanding. So Ian it is.

In a vacuum, Ian, because I prefer the name. If I was naming a son, who presumably has my partner as a parent and his surname I'd use Ethan. Partially because Ian doesn't sound as good with my partners surname, and partially because my dad calls my father-in-law "Ian", it's sort of an inside joke.

Ethan. I dislike how incomplete Ian looks and sounds. I always want it to be something like Julian, Adrian, etc.
vote up1
Ethan. It's more manly. The "th" makes all the difference. Although the one Ian I've really known was plenty manly. There is no logic to this okay?_______________________________________________________________________________________

May I add....Rather silly to add two days later, but it's bugging me I didn't say this to begin with....I also like Ethan more because, despite its present day popularity, it has an eighteenth-century vibe that Ian lacks.

Ethan, as Ian is quite dated where I live.

IanEthan's my nephew's name.

Ian.

Ethan, because at least it isn't just a whine.

Ian 100%

Ethan.I've dated one-too-many bratty Ians. Not a fan.

Ian.I feel like Ian's longer popularity and greater familiarity makes it seem warmer and like it's not trying as hard. If not for that, I'd still prefer Ian because I just don't like that soft TH sound.

IanThat's an easy one for me. I've had Ian on my IRL list before. Ethan I really dislike.

Ian! Love it. I've never cared for Ethan really. Then I saw a minor character on Downton Abbey which kind of made me like it. But my love for Ian is strong and makes this an easy choice.

Ian. It's cooler.
