Ramona
A friend is having a daughter. They have been thinking a lot about Ramona, it's a family name (a grandma or grand aunt or someone who has passed away) and they think it might be cool to use in an honorary way. My friend is of European (German, French Swiss, etc) descent and her husband is Italian, this is their first child. 1. What would be good as a middle name? They're at a complete loss, as am I! The last name is two syllables and starts with an S. 2. They like Romy as a nickname, they don't want to use Mona. How does that sound? Could that be a nickname that is taken seriously on an adult? 3. Are there any bad associations or huge teasing opportunities?4. In general, what do you think of Ramona (Romy) as a name?

I just had to answer this, because I am a Ramona ;)so..
2. Romy is a good NN. It's cute, but also usable on a grown woman. (I was less lucky and got a quite embarassing NN for an adult..I'd prefer Romy and think it's the best possible NN.)
3. I grew up in touch with different languages (german, french, english, italian, ...)but never had real problems with my name. The only thing to mention is,that the french part of my family (my hubbys family) didn't understand my FN on the first try. But that happens once and never again.
4. I like it and it's not very common.
1. I try, it's a bit strange for me ;)
Ramona Celeste, Ramona June, Ramona Thea, Ramona Mae, Ramona Lia, Ramona Delia...

1. Ramona Therese, Ramona Shay, Ramona Jane2. Romy's cute. Reminds me of Romy & Michele's High School Reunion. I prefer Ramona on its own.3. Not really. Maybe like, Mona Lisa? But who cares.4. I think Ramona is beautiful but definitely has a somber feeling to it. I mostly think of the song "To Ramona" by Bob Dylan which tends to make sense to me in dark times.

Ramona is stylish and surprising without being off-putting. It would be fun to meet a young one.Romy is fine too, but the only times I've heard it used, it's been short for Rosemarie. So if I met a Romy, that would be my first guess and I'd have to be explained to. Which is fine.

I think Ramona is a fantastic choice. It's spunky. It's unusual, but not unheard-of. I don't think it would have much teasing potential. I do think Romy is a terrible nickname though. Ramona is fine as is. No nn needed. I'm no good at combos, sorry.

1. a D name. Ramona Desiree Surname, Ramona Diana Surname, Ramona Demetra Surname, Ramona Daniela Surname, Ramona Dorothy Surname.2. I think Romy sounds terrible. 3. Just the Cleary books, and I don't think that's a very bad association. The character Ramona was kind of a dirty humble child but still lovable, IIRC. It'd be no worse than being named Matilda IMO.4. I like the name Ramona. It's kind of retro, but was never so popular that it would seem dated. But I would nickname her Ray, or even Moe or Rem or Rona, before Romy. I don't like Mona either but I don't think Romy is a good nickname for Ramona. There's no roam sound, and "Romy" is sort of precious and trendy so it's too artificial. I think they should name her Romana or Rosemary if they want to call her Romy.

Ramona's cool. I wouldn't want to use it for a daughter, but if my name was Ramona I wouldn't mind it so much, except for the Ramona Quimby association. In case you aren't familiar, Ramona Quimby is a character in a series of very, very famous and popular children's books by Beverly Cleary, written from the fifties into the nineties. That's really the main association mos Americans have with the name, though in one of the books, it's mentioned that Ramona has heard grown-ups sing her the song with "Ramona, I hear the mission bells" ..." so often and she's tired of it.Ramona Quimby's middle name was Geraldine. She did not have a nickname, and I would much rather Ramona just go by Ramona and not Romy or Mona.I do know one Ramona, and Ramona is her middle name. Her first name is Maria, and all her sisters have the first name Maria and use their middle names. They're Filipino and devoutly Catholic.Ramona LouiseRamona GailRamona IvyRamona JoyRamona SuzanneRamona PaigeMy husband's special name for our daughter is Sweet Ramona. Nobody knows where he came up with it, her name is Valerie.

1. Middle names:
-Ramona Alice
-Ramona Jean
-Ramona Gertrude
-Ramona Selene
-Ramona Harmony
-Ramona Lily
-Ramona Irene
-Ramona Therese
-Ramona Cécile
-Ramona Lynette
-Ramona Edelweiss2. I think Romy should be saved for something like Romilda. They can use Rae for Ramona, if they want.3. The only thing I can think of when it comes to the name Ramona are the Ramona books, but I don't think there'll be any teasing over the name.4. Ramona is okay, but drop Romy as a nickname.
