Ophelia
I love Ophelia, but are the associations with it just too sad? Almost everybody associates it with a suicide, and if they don't they probably associate it with Pan's Labyrinth, which is a lovely but very depressing movie. What do you think of it?

Honestly, I don't have any association with it! And that might make me a little uncultured but I never did the Shakespeare play with Ophelia (and I really wasn't going to read the other of Shakespeares works in my own time)… I've never seen Pan's Labyrinth either. So for me, Ophelia is a clean slate. It reminds me of Octavia (which is my #1 girls name) only much softer and flowery. For me, Octavia is boy shorts, dirty knees and rock music, Ophelia is a flowing paisley dress, pale skin and running through a Spring field.Ophelia is sweet, I change my mind regularly on whether I like "Fifi". But it's on my radar.

Personally, I don't mind the association, even with a personal past of suicidal attempts and ideation and having family members who have died of suicide.

I think Ophelia’s definitely gaining more popularity, and it’s possibly seen in a more romantically tragic, creative, different way that’s appealing to parents. An art teacher at my school had a daughter called Ophelia May. I don’t like it, but not because of the suicide connection. I didn’t like the character, and it just feels wispy and insubstantial to me. Plus it reminds me of offal in terms of sound.
