Mns needed and Chinese names
Hi everyone,I haven't spoken to my husband about names since I was pregnant. We found it really hard to agree on anything. I brought up the subject with him yesterday and he actually liked a couple of names I like too. They aren't my absolute favourites, but it still made me really pleased! I can't think of middle names for them though because he claims not to like any on my list. For an idea of my style see http://www.behindthename.com/bb/arcview.php?id=508216&board=babyMariana
Odilia
CelestineHe doesn't like any of my boy's names. The only one we could agree on is Luke and that is out because I called the baby it in my head. If you are really brave you can suggest some boy's names too. At the moment all I can get out of him is Joseph. As a side note, do you think we should give our future children a Chinese name (dh is Malaysian, ethnic Chinese)? I don't speak any Mandarin or Cantonese, my husband speaks both. I don't know any Chinese names at all and my husband really isn't interested. His Chinese name is Wan Keen which has put him off in a big way. Anyway, I was just wondering what people thought of it.TIA!

How about one of these (plus links)I like Celestine the best of the three you listed. For Celestine, such a long name with emphasis on the first syllable, I personally would go with either a one-syllable mn (the two I like would be Claire and Joy; I admit that Rose fits nicely, decide for yourself if the "Everygirl's mn" is for you), or a two-syllable mn that has emphasis on the *second* syllable. I offer a list that meets this limited set of criteria. There are a few that sound alike due to same or similar endings, and I have grouped those together. The ones I like have the * symbol:Celestine Caresse
Celestine Cecile
Celestine Chantal*
Celestine Corrine (like "begin")
Celestine Leanne
Celestine Lorraine
Celestine Louise
Celestine Marie*
Celestine Michelle
Celestine Sarai*
Celestine TamarCelestine Caprice
Celestine Cherise (shuh-REESE)
Celestine Elise
Celestine PatriceCelestine Annette
Celestine Jeanette

Thank youThanks for your suggestions. I like Celestine too. It is interesting that you brought up Rose, this is my mother in law's English name. Her Chinese name means Rose too and my sister in law's daughter has it as a middle name in Chinese (her first name is Yasmin).I like Joy, although I don't think my husband would like it (I'm going to try it out anyway), and I have three cousins called Clare, so I don't think I'm going to go there.Celestine Corrine (like "begin")- I have a soft spot for Corinne.
Celestine Marie*- Marie is one of the few names my husband likes!
Celestine Sarai*
Celestine Elise- I found out this morning he likes Elise!
Celestine Patrice- Nice because we call my father Patrick/ Paddy a lot.I don't think any of those ending in a hard "t" sound would work because of our surname T___Celestine Simone*- This is pretty
Celestine Siobhan- I'm half Irish and half Ukrainian so I thought of using an Irish name or even a Ukrainian one. I suppose I might feel a bit of a joke using a Ukrainian name because I don't speak it well, I probably speak better Irish and that is only because I learnt it at school. Either way, I thought it might sound like the names are on some horrible cultural collision course (Fionnuala Kateryna Xiao Xiao- argh!).

If your long list were candy, I would have gained a pound just now. Our tastes are very similar. I weep that there is a lover of names like Barnaby and Winifred who may never get to use them because their partner doesn't share their style. Ah well, Mariana, Odelia and Celestine show promise. You certainly can have fun using them. How about:Mariana Celeste
Mariana Charlote
Mariana Eve
Mariana Sylvie
Mariana Violet
Mariana Alice
Mariana Lily
Mariana Sophie
Mariana Pearl
Mariana Fleur Odelia Constance (prefer Ottilie)
Odelia Marie
Odelia Violet
Odelia Celeste
Odelia Christabel
Odelia Frances
Odelia Catherine
Odelia Mary
Odelia RubyCelestine Adele (too much "el" perhaps?)
Celestine Leonie

Thank you! Thanks for your reply! It makes me quite sad I can't use Barnaby and Winifred too. I am working really hard on him though. I think with the unfortunate associations of his Chinese name he is trying to avoid us using a name he thinks has teasing potential.Of your suggestions I like:Mariana Celeste- I love this, but our surname begings with a "t" so it wouldn't flow very nicely.
Mariana Charlotte- super, but ends in "t" too.
Mariana Eve
Mariana Sylvie
Mariana Violet- my husband thinks Violet sounds too much like violent.
Mariana Alice- my sister is called Alice, it might be nice to honour her.
Mariana Sophie- my sister (my sister Alice not my sister Laura,I just realised I have mentioned them both) has claimed Sophie :(
Mariana Pearl- you know I hadn't thought of Pearl. It is going on my list!
Odelia Constance (prefer Ottilie) I prefer Ottilie too by miles. My husband says it is silly if you aren't French and people will mispronounce it :(.
Odelia Marie
Odelia Violet
Odelia Celeste
Odelia Christabel

I know Ottilie is a French name, but perhaps if he came to see it more as part of the charming, old-fashioned name trend, like Millie, Lillie, Natalie, Isabelle and Josephine. What about Ottilie, nn Tillie?Anyhoo, I'm tickled that you like Pearl so well. I had a funny feeling when I typed the combination. I'm not sure if you're considering it as a fn, but I thought I'd pass on my favorite Pearl combination. I saw a little girl in a magazine once named Pearl Ann-Marie (or was it Pearl Annmarie?). Similar to your Mariana, no? Pearl Marianne? If you wanted to honor your sister Laura, how about Daphne? Celestine Daphne?

I'll test out Ottilie with him, our tastes in names are just not compatible and how much time we spend thinking about names is rather different too. I like Tillie ever so much, and I quite fancied it as a nn if I used Matilda. He said no way though, I'm hoping I might still be able to get it into the mn position.I'm not sure when I'll be naming a baby, so for now it is great fun to have a wonderful list without my husband spoiling things. Being the person I am though, I have to talk about the things I'm interested in and he brings me back down to earth with a thump.I love Pearl Marianne, I think Pearl has great potential actually, good instincts! I'd never thought of Daphne I think it could work. Thanks again. :)

Thanks for your suggestionsI really like some of theseMariana Elise- this is sweet.
Mariana Odile- I like it, combining two of the names!
Mariana Estelle- fabulous
Mariana Lucille- I'm more of a Lucia person, but Lucille probably pips it on flow with Mariana
Mariana Evelyn- I can't use this anymore because of an association, but it is pretty.Odilia Esther- I have an Aunt Esther, I like it.
Odilia Carmen- I love the opera Carmen!
Odilia Cosette- gorgeousCelestine Isolde- very classy-old-fashioned.
Celestine Linnea- pretty, I think Linnea freshens it up.Thanks!
