Can't say I'm really surprised by this. (Then again, I'm Italian...)What surprises me in a way is just how much those names are used. Kinda makes me wish for more variation, but I'm also glad zany names like Zaedyn and Jhakstyn are but a distant thought in the minds of many of my compatriots.

Welcome to Behind the Name!!Here there are few Italians (Fiammetta, me and others).I agree with you: we are very traditional and I'd like that many beautiful name will be more used but creative spellings are so weird to understand...lol

I’ve got to say that these names are way nicer than the top names in England and the USA lol. Those percentages are rather high. My favourites from the lists are:
Leonardo
Lorenzo
Alessandro
Riccardo
Giuseppe
Antonio
Federico
Diego
Giovanni
LucaSofia
Alice
Chiara
Ludovica
Camilla
Gaia
Elena
Elisa
Viola

Some of these names are quite familiar because they've taken over everywhere - like Sofia. Yet in other cases, it's nice to see that what is trendy in Italy is not necessarily what's trendy everywhere else.I like:Antonio
Diego
Marco
&
Giulia (though I'd use Julia)
Ginevra
Vittoria
Anna
Chiara - I once knew three sisters (first-generation Italian-Americans) named Luciana, Tania, and Chiara
Ludovica (this is really interesting to me)
Bianca
Gaia
Francesca (one of my favorites)
Alessia
Rebecca
Elena
Adele (though I'd use the French pronunciation)
Elisa
Viola"Mia" being trendy in Italy is very confusing to me, since it means "my."

The Italian top 30 isn't very surprising. In fact, it's very similar to the previous years' tops. Lots of the names sound really boring, weak and too meaningless. Some of them seem elderly, because they have been used since a long time. I think they are in the Top 30 because in Southern Italy newborns are used to be named after their grandparents. The only names of this top I like are Lorenzo, Mattia, Elia, Martina, Giorgia, Gaia, Elena and Viola. There are some names sounding better in other languages -for example, Alexander is much more euphonic than Alessandro; Marc sounds more refined than Marco etc. I generally dislike trendy names, I prefer more particular and rare ones -and that's why I became a name nerd.

I find many of these names beautiful and even exciting, but then again, I'm not an Italian. With those percentages, I would assume these top names would get judged as basic and boring names.I like...Leonardo
Francesco
Lorenzo
Alessandro
Andrea - After I watched the series "La figlia di Elisa" years ago I've found Andrea one of the sexiest men's names, lol.
Tommaso
Riccardo
Edoardo
Matteo
Antonio - My great-grandfather's middle name!
Federico
Giovanni
Pietro
Filippo
Luca - I only like Luca in the Italian context, otherwise it's a bleh trendy name to me.
Giulio
AlessioAurora
Giulia
Ginevra
Alice - Though I don't quite like the Italian pronunciation...
Emma - My own name :)
Giorgia
Beatrice
Greta
Vittoria
Matilde
Ludovica - I'm actually quite smitten by Ludovica!
Arianna
Gaia
Francesca
Alessia
Adele
Elisa

Hello Felie!Yes, I am surprised so many babies received top names. That's a high percentage. Italians seem to be very traditional.I like Leonardo, Edoardo, Mattia and Elia. Most Italian boys names are too long and complicated for me. I prefer shorter names for boys. Also many Italian boys names are girls names in France and Germany such as Gabriele, Andrea, Simone or Daniele so they don't work for me personally. I am surprised that names like Francesco and Andrea are still so so common. They feel tired to me. I studied abroad and there were so many guys from Italy named Daniele, Salvatore, Francesco, Andrea, Giuseppe etc. my age so it is weird they are still so common for babies. Naming trends seem to change slowly in Italy. For girls I do like Aurora, Alice, Beatrice, Sara, Gaia, Rebecca and Elena. Many of the others are also okay. Elisa rising surprises me, I thought it was overused in Italy in the 90s already. Same with Francesca, why is it rising again? :O Nicole feels super dated but maybe in Italy it is in fashion? Also Mia, doesn't it mean "mine" in Italian? Wouldn't that be weird? Or is it so high up because it is popular in the German speaking area in the North of Italy?

Hi Perrine!!!Yes, Naming trends change very very slowly.Indeed I dislike the most of the Top30 and the names I would consider are so popular that I dislike them too. I personally know at least three people with each of these names. It is so annoying.Actually this was the reason why I became a name nerd and I looked for sites like BtN. I used to collect any name that was different from the..."only 100" names that everyone had around me when I was a child! LolNames that were fashion in 1990s like Nicole are still overly popular. Nothing changes.I think that a reason is the TFR of 1.27. If the most of women are childless and a half has just one child so it is reasonable that they choose names that are ok for all in the couple (she, him, her parents, his parents, friends ect..).Yes, Mia means "mine" and I'm a bit horrified that it is so popular. It was a Celebrity name and also as you said a name used by German speaking community here. But the meaning doesn't change. I would not use it, surely.
