Oswin and Oswald
What do you think of Oswin? I've been liking it lately. I also like Oswald, but I keep associating it with The Penguin from Batman so I don't like it as much. Which do you like better, if either? Do you think Oz is a cute nickname?

I think Oz is an adorable nickname. I would most likely to use Oz as an acronym of a longer name. For instance, Octavian Zair could have the nickname Oz based on its initials. Oswin is nice. Oswald is more awkward and formal.

These are the names of two brothers who were Northumbrian kings in the anglo saxon period. Oswald became a saint also.

I like Oswin a lot but partner vetoed. He likes Osland. Oswald isn't usable imo.

I don't like either

Unfortunately Oswald has infamous associations. It may not be enough of a change but it brings to mind Oswalt, as in comic Patton Oswalt.

I really like Oswin, I just think it's cute! A bit nerdy and bookish, so very up my alley. I do like Oz/Ozzy as a nn, and Win too. Oswald is a bit more different sound wise, but I do have more associations with it; namely Penguin as you mentioned, and Lee Harvey Oswald. It also feels a bit heavier and less fun and boyish, although that's not necessarily negative. They both immediately make me think of a Doctor Who character too.

I knew a very fine Oswald who never went by any nn at all. His life was short and sad. I prefer Edwin to Oswin.

I actually met a female Ozzy the other day short for Oswalda! I do not really care for it and find it too clunky and awkward but was extremely intrigued! She had apparently been named for a grandfather. Oswald is interesting, I wouldn't put my nose up to it if I met one but it's not necessarily my cup of tea. Oswin I mildly dislike.
