What do you think of the name Hector?
This was the maternal step-grandfathers name. I always liked his house growing up. In the movie “Do the Right Thing” (1989) Mookie has a son named Hector. At some point he says “...bad enough his name his Hector.” I guess implying that Hector is a pretty bad name to have.

I love it and would use it.

I think it's a neat old name. It comes across a bit like Arthur to me but less ordinary. Or like Victor but maybe nicer. Or like Gregory but less dated. It also reminds me of Maurice and Hugo. I could see someone thinking of it as stuffy maybe, but I think it's got a warm, sturdy vibe.
I do associate it with the verb a little, but I more strongly associate it with 'Hector Protector' - a very old children's rhyme (but in my head a book illustrated by Maurice Sendak).

People probably don’t like it because the verb has such a negative meaning.

I like it: not for the Iliad, though - I think of it as Scottish, like my MIL's uncle. I suppose having a name that shortens to Heck might be inconvenient occasionally, but it's nothing to be too concerned about.
