Indecisive between Name-surname combination
I’m writing a story and there’s a tough young man. I’m between either James Crane or James Blackwell. I am open to other first names you think that’s good and suit the character. What do you say?

I vote Blackwell. Crane just seems totally cliche to me.
Black is a more common surname, common enough that it being cliche or picked to suit a character, isn't so noticeable, in my opinion.Jamie or Jim would seem suited to a tough young man than being called James, IMO.

I'd go with James Crane. James Blackwell seems more polite.

James Blackwell flows better imo

For a 'tough guy' would pull out the nn Jim and not use the full name at all. Jim Crane or Jim Blackwell both sound different and now Blackwell works as his tough guy name.

James Crane sounds tougher and is a good name. James Blackwell doesn't give off the same vibe to me. If you must use Blackwell:Samson Blackwell
Gage Blackwell
Gus Blackwell
Harlan Blackwell
Vince Blackwell
Dean Blackwell
