Fine as a nickname, albeit overdone. As a given name, absolutely not. It manages to sound both immature and dated.Go with a Kate-related name - Katherine, Caitlin, Kathleen, Katerina, etc. - and use it as a nickname. Absolutely not as a given name.

My niece is named Katie and it suits her perfectly. After considering the longer “proper” names that would give Katie as a nickname, my sister decided she’d rather just give her the name she was going to call her. (As a child, I also had a friend named Katie who was just about the sweetest girl you could ever meet.) In my opinion it depends what you’re going for. It’s not unique or flashy, which will make it boring to some, but for others who dislike new and “out there” naming styles it might signal that you have lovely, classic taste.

I dislike it's strongly. It's dull, whiny, and childish. If I was a Katherine/Katharine, I'd much rather be a Kathy, Kit, or even Kitty.

It's not an objectionable nickname, but I'd hate to have it as my legal name. And even as a nickname, I'd likely prefer Kate, or better yet Kat. (Heck, for Katarina I'd prefer Rina!)

I quite like it, but I think I'm neutral on it. It sounds youthful and cute. But I prefer it only as a nickname of Katherine, Katharine, etc.

Phenomenally overused and therefore becoming dated. Perhaps this signals a drop in the popularity of Katherine, or if not, it might give this generation of Katherine people the option of using Kathy or Kitty instead, or just staying with the full form.

Cute but insubstantial. Would much prefer it as a diminutive to names like Kathleen, Katrina, Katherine, and all its other permutations.

Dull and overdone. There is nothing wrong with it but where I live it’s very common. Not that long ago I had a Katie, Katy, Caty and Catie in my brownie unit at the same time.
