Very cool in Spanish, but in English it's too reminiscent of the car.

I have a friend named Mercedes. She is Hispanic. I can't really see this name on anyone other than Hispanic, because then I feel like they're naming after the car brand, which I find tacky.

The only Mercedes (also called "Sadie") I ever knew had a very interesting start to life: she was the turkey baster baby of a rich, eccentric couple who eventually asked her birth/surrogate mother (who was also the wife's sister) to live with them as part of a "throuple". They lived in a huge rambling log-cabin mansion in the country, with very over-the-top Country Western decor, and they were just very odd people. This was in the early 90s, so it was the scandal of the decade in that neck of the woods, let me tell you. So I think of Mercedes as a "scandalous eccentric trashy millionaire" sort of name, which is pretty fun.

I prefer Mercy. The other brings to mind the car.

No doubt in Spanish and/or Catholic usage it's OK, but elsewhere it's just an expensive car.

I've always thought it was glamorous.
