Not really a fan, I think I'd go for Frederick more.

It’s wonderful, though I do prefer Frederick.

What a nice name! I've always thought it was such a nice name to the point where it would actually hang out near the top of my lists. But then a Fred flew into my life and got really big and sort of villainous and now every time I read the name I feel a whole mixture of reactions, of which "bastard" is close to the top of the list. But also, I still think it's a nice name, and I still think he's really nice! Hahaha No yeah I think it would be nice if it came back. It's plain and gentle, and the "Fr" gives it a bit of complexity to stop it from being dead boring unless it is dead common. Which it isn't anymore so.In my lists it usually is the rival to "Ned," which I actually like more, but don't like any full names for.

It's a kindly-and-slightly-grumpy grandpa name.
My mother has two cats, brothers, named Ted and Fred. Ted is the friendlier one and Fred is the one who is usually the instigator when they get to swinging at each other.

Definitely OK, but not a name I'd ever use. Which means I wouldn't use Frederick either. It's a family name, not very direct: four distant uncles were named Cecil, Campbell, Frederick (Fred) and Edgar. And, though I appreciate family names, I don't appreciate any of these, including Cecil which is also my father's name (on a different side of the family).

It feels more friendly than Frank. Fred is cozy and green, I like it.
