My niece chose this as her confirmation name. I'm guessing part of the reason she chose it is because he dad is obsessed with his Irish ancestry, and St. Dymphna was Irish.
I don't know much about the saint beyond the fact she was Irish and the patron saint of mental illness.
Edited: St. Dymphna is the saint of ADHD, and my niece is ADHD. I bet that's a big reason she chose it.
Thoughts on the name? And if you have a confirmation name what is it? My husband's is Patrick and my daughter's is Agnes.

I'm not crazy about the name. Just not my thing.
Never had a confirmation name, because I wasn't raised Catholic. Both of my parents were, but my dad told us this week that he never once believed, not even as a kid. That was interesting.

I remember when I was growing up that prayer cards with St. Dymphna were common and popular in my parish(suburban Detroit, Michigan). I'm glad she has found a saint she feels a connection with.
I did not complete my confirmation but I was planning to take the name Jadwiga.

I'm not either. I've always thought it was ridiculous. I also dislike apocrypchal saints - Cecilia, Christopher, Veronica. There are so many amazing historical saints - Francis, Catherine, Juliana, Thomas, Hildegard. I also dislike the woman desiring to remain a virgin and being violently killed because of it.
That said, I understand and respect my niece's choice.

I'm not one to care about saints or their stories, but my Italian relations were big on Saint Lucy since she was the saint of eyes and several had eye issues over the years. I remember that creepy statue with her eyes on a little dish being in my grandmother's room growing up.
If it makes your niece happy then that's all that matters.

It's a difficult name to love in regards to spelling and pronunciation but I think it's an interesting choice. It's wonderful that your niece has a special connection to her confirmation name.
My guess is every name nerd would love to choose a name for themselves. The trouble would be to pick just one.

Is there a Saint Dymphna? I think Catholics need a Saint name for their confirmation name as a special patron and guide. Why did she chose it?

Dymphna is my mother's middle name, and I think it's a rather interesting name. I kinda like it.
Saint Dymphna is the patron saint of the mentally ill, and her story is tragic, but it's also beautiful.
It may be tricky to say, but it has a real story and meaning behind it.

A lovely confirmation name in that she is so personally connected to the saint bearing this name.
