Message: "Meche?" - Behind the Name

I saw this name in my Spanish book. It is female, and I believe my Spanish teacher pronounced it--I'll try to write this well--Meh-cheh with more of a Spanish E sound rather than just the flat short E sound if that makes sense. Do you like this name? I do. Do you know anything about it, like what it could be related to, or its meaning?

As Iac said, Meche is a nn for Mercedes. I've never heard it as a name on its own though.

I saw the name Meche used for a character in a computer game called "Grim Fandango". It was used as a short form of Mercedes, which means "mercy" in Spanish. I agree, it's adorable.
