Gentry & Others
In the BAs today I came across a baby girl named Gentry Reagan. While I think Gentry is a pleasant sounding word, a pleasant sounding word does not necessarily a good name make. I keep overthinking it and wondering why they chose "gentry" of all things.Gentry's contemporaries areCalvin Miseo

Gentry is nms, and especially not for a girl. And paired with Reagan, it's impossible to tell it's a girl's name, imo. Not wise.
:( Would they name their son Anna Jocelyn (even though both were used, though long ago, as male names)? No. I like:

Samuel
Eli
Benjamin
Isaiah
Simone
Margaret Marian
Isabel
Eva
Ella
Caroline Georgia
Leah

When I hear Gentry, I immediately think Bobbie Gentry, and thus "The Ballad of Billy Joe." Probably not what they were going for. Array

Gentry is beyond awful. Faux-pretentious and completely random.

I like Gentry as a name, not sure which gender I prefer it on though. Personally, I first saw it as the surname of a character by one of my favorite author's, Laurell K. Hamilton. The character (as well as the series name) is Merry Gentry (Actually Meredith "Merry"). Gentry was actually the surname of Laurell K. Hamilton's grandmother.According to Ancestry Gentry is an English nickname from the Old French genterie "nobility of birth or character".

I agree that while gentry is a fine word, it doesn't necessarily make a fine name.About Gentry's cohort:
I especially like Landon, Christopher, Shane and Wyatt. Treaden? Hmmm ... not even sure how to pronounce it.
Among the girls, I like Hannah, Harmony and Leah. Why saddle poor Gwendalyn with a name she will need to spell all through her life? Or perhaps the parents weren't aware that the usual spelling is Gwendolyn.
