Dilemma (very long)
For awhile I had moved away from using family names in my combos, but now I'm liking the idea of them again. However, this presents a dilemma for me because I'm closer to my mother's side of the family than my father's side, yet I like more of the names from that side. For instance, my sisters are Amina Marcia (pronounced mar-SEE-uh) and Valerie Joyce. I'm closer to Amina, but dislike her names whereas I love both Valerie and Joyce...but we're not close. The same with my grandmothers. I was close to my maternal grandmother, Gladys Antoinette, but had a severe dislike of my other grandmother Joyce. It wouldn't be an issue, but I would hate to hurt my mother's and sister's feelings by choosing names from the other side of my family when it's no secret that I'm not close with them. I know that my mom would never even acknowledge that it bugged her, because she would want me to make my own choices, but I also know that it would bug her.So...what would you do if you were me? Keep in mind I'm not actually planning to have children for at least a few years. Also, can you think of any variants or alternatives for:Amina
Marcia
Valerie
Joyce
Gladys
Louise (my mother's mn)
Odessa (my mother's mn)Also, what would you think of using my mother's maiden name, Riles, as a mn for a son or daughter? Too much of a stretch?"No one can make you feel inferior without your consent."

If you're not close to them and it will hurt those you are close to, I wouldn't use Valerie or Joyce. It's not worth it. Variants / similar names are your friends:Amina: Mina, Amy, Verity (= truth), Truth. Marcia: Marcella (nn Ella?), Mercy, Mercedes (nn Mercy?).Gladys: GlynisLouise: Louisa, Lois, Aloisia (nn Allie?), Eloise (nn Ellie?), Eloisia Odessa: Ulyssa (Ulysses is a variant of Odysseus)Mina Verity
Marcella Truth
Glynis Eloise
Eloise Truth
Amy LouisaWhat do you think?

I like using family names too but I wouldnt use any name I didnt like.
Remember that when you have children you wont be the only person deciding on the names your partner might want some of his family names honoured too. :)
Personally I wouldnt worry about it there are only so many family names you can use unless you have twelve children or give each child seven names :)
You can use the opposite gender of a family name - example call a son Louis to honour Louise
Amina means truthful - look for other names with the same or similar meaning Alethia Verity or go for something similar in look say Amy or Mina
Marcia - look at its related names maybe you would like one of them Mark / Marc Marcus Marcela Marcie
Valerie - varients Valerian or look for names with a similar meaning
Joyce - Josse Jocosa or use part of the name Joy
Gladys -maybe use Claudia as Gladys has in the past been used as a welsh form of Claudia
Louise (my mother's mn) Louisa or maybe the male form Louis or Lewis
Odessa (my mother's mn) maybe a related name UlyssaAs a middle name it would be okay to use Riles

My boyfriend's mother's name is Joy, but he's not close with her at all. We've decided that our son can be named after my bf's father, David. Thanks."No one can make you feel inferior without your consent."

Personally, I wouldn't use a family name just because I like/love the name, especially if I wasn't close to that family member. However, I would consider using the name of a person I love and I'm very close to even if I didn't *love* the name in and of itself; I actually do love the name because I love the person, if that makes sense. However, if I thought using any name of a family member would hurt another's feelings or cause jealousy, etc., I probably wouldn't use it. It may be best just to start from scratch and not use any family names at all.
