If ever I was to use French names in the future, that would be high on my list. I love it.

I like it, it's underused and has a classy sound imo.

I like the sound of Etienne, however, I think it could be problematic in an English-speaking culture.

I think it's wonderfully handsome. So many French boy names are--they're just classy in a way Camden and Jayden aren't. ;) Plus, it sounds really...athletic, I suppose, and strong, to me, because it always reminds me of fencing. The similarity to "epee", I suppose.Array

I like it though the only Etienne I ever met is not a very nice person.

This name is on my official faves list; it always reminds me of Rutger Hauer, on whom I've been crushing since I was sixteen (nearly 23 yr!). He played a knight named Étienne de Navarre in the movie Ladyhawke. Not the best movie ever made, by any means, but fun to look at him in it.I pronounce it ey-tee-ENN, if you can tell what that sounds like; the first syllable is somewhere between "eh-" and "ay-" and is minimally stressed; the second syllable is pretty short; the third is the longest and most stressed.

That's a good enough reason to like a name. I like the name Shaun because of an eleven year long crush on the dashing South African cricketer Shaun Pollock. I think you got the pronunciation spot on - much better than my attempt. Anyway I don't see the name often that's why I am curious to learn what people think of it.Thank you for your interest & input.
:o)

Neat, isn't it, the psychology of names, how our feelings about names and real people are so intertwined and nearly impossible to separate.Funny enough, I love the name Sean, but also have a special place in my heart for someone who spells it Shaun, like your cricketer. ;DAnd I just thought to add, it's odd, but as much as I like Étienne I don't care for Steven / Stephen so much; I don't dislike them, I just don't get the warm fuzzies either.

Steven/StephenI know exactly what you mean. Most of my favourite names have personal meanings that transcend far beyond etymologies, popularity & sound. And I think that applies to most of the posters in one way or another. That's why I always appreciate it when posters tell the story behind a particular name & why it is so special to them - like you did with Etienne. Ditto on Steven/Stephen. I have never liked that name. I find it plain & boring, but I don't mind it on someone else's child.Oh I have been meaning to tell you I love the bindi that you wear on your forehead. It makes you look pleasantly exotic & mysterious.:o)

Why, thank you very much :-D

I like it.I wouldn't use it, but I like it quite a bit. It reminds me of one of my favorite historical figures, Etienne Brûlé.

I agree I would never use it personally, but there's just something about it that makes it so intriguing to me.
