Asher and Birdie with Grace
Asher and Birdie have been married since they met at the University of Chicago as a junior and sophomore. Birdie was studying theater and performance, while Asher was a student of law, letters, and society, on his way to law school. They quickly bonded, Asher impressed by Birdie's quick wit and introspective work and Birdie endlessly entertained by Asher's humor and deep worldview. They married shortly after Birdie's graduation, and Asher started work as a lawyer the year after. Now, he's the mayor of Chicago, and Birdie stays at home and writes. They tried for children for a while, but had issues with infertility. They had decided to rest on their family planning until a sudden tragedy struck, and Birdie's best friend, Annabelle Walton, died of cancer shortly after giving birth to her daughter, Grace. A single mother, Annabelle left in her will for Grace to be adopted by her godparents, Asher and Birdie. Though they grieved, Asher and Birdie adopted Grace and have been working to give her the childhood she deserves.
