Commonest nickname for this is, of course, Ginny. Virginia has a classic quality to it, much like other 19th-century popular names that are back on the popular list. Makes us think of little Virginia who wrote to the Chicago Sun to ask if there was really a Santa Claus. Conjures up stately images of the South. (In case you don't know, the state was named after Queen Elizabeth I, who, since she didn't marry, was known as the "Virgin Queen.") To me it's an excellent choice--common enough to be a standard name but not so common that every girl on the block will have the same name.
