William seems way too formal for a baby. I agree, you SHOULD be able to pick your own nickname (or change it completely if you feel so inclined), but you've got to call your kid SOMETHING until they're old enough to decide for themselves. Anyway, right after posting this, I went and looked at another web site that had a ton of nicknames for William. Bo was on the list. That's quite a nice surprise as Bo is one of my favorite names (albeit for a girl), so that would be a perfect nickname. I think it would grow on me as a boy's name. Problem solved! Wow, that was quick!

I'm glad you've found something, but why not just call him William his first years of life, before he chooses a nickname (if he would even want one)? Just curious.

She already said she feels it's too formal for a baby/small child.

Yes, but...

I know, but I thought maybe another reason would be that her husband or husband's father was called William already. I should have posted my question as, "are there any other reasons why you wouldn't call him William?" Sorry.
