Rufus is a great name, I've always loved it. I know people who say it's a dogs name too. But then again, I love Jasper, Oscar and Felix and everyone says they are dog/cat names too! Unfortunatly I think there is teasing potential with the name Rufus, but if you really love it, then maybe just use it anyway. You could always use it as a mn instead.
