and that most churches now do not see her as such? Furthermore, she played a very important role in Jesus' life and I would be using Magda/Magdalene in her honor.

I love Magdalen(a) just for this reason (to honor Mary Magdalen). And why not use the full name and just call her Magda if you want? That way she can have more nn to choose from one day.
