We liked Gus a lot for our son too- didn't do it though. It definitely needs to be a nickname, and we didn't like any of the full names. None of them went with our surname.
Fergus was the most probable- pretty cool actually to the point where it may just stay as Fergus
I initially liked b/c Gus McCrae from the both the book and fantastic mini-series Lonesome Dove. Robert Duvall as Gus is about as likable as a character can be
