Edmund sounds a little "nerdy" to me. Also there is the very pitiful nickname of Ed to deal with.

Desmond sounds very dashing and handsome. The possible nickname Desi is both cool and cute.

I think Ed bareley qualifies as a name. It reminds more of an onomatopoeia word, such as "thud".
