would I name my daughter the beautiful Calliope and let her go by the boring/trendy Callie? Doesn't make much sense to me. Does it really need a nickname?I think it's not any more difficult than Phoebe or Daphne. just my opinion.

I don't think any name "needs" a nickname, even if it's long, but once she's old enough to decide on such matters by herself, you can't really stop her from using a nickname if she wishes to. What would you do? Punish her if you hear her introducing herself as Callie?

It wouldn't be a matter of "letting" her
Calliope is a long name--4 syllables--and it's very obscure. Phoebe and Daphne are all two syllables and fairly well-known. Almost all 4 syllable names (Alexandra, Elizabeth, etc) get shortened at some point. If you really hate Callie, don't use Calliope. I promise that at some point she will be called Callie. Also, she may decide that Calliope is too weird and she wants to go by Callie.
It has nothing to do with you "letting" her. It's her name--she gets to choose.
