The immediate origin is Polish, as you thought, -owicz being the patronymic ending - "son of". However, this is one of a group of Polish surnames indicating an Armenian ancestry. I don't know what Agops means, but I suspect it could be a version of the Armenian Hagop, meaning Jacob or James.

Hey,I have always been told its actually Austrian. Agop means John
Sowich mean son of and if I'm correct that would be Johnson in English translation.Thanks,
