I'm not sure how popular Maree is - however, 'ee' ending's seem to be catching on for girls eg. Aubrey spelt Aubree. It's probably an attempt to either 'feminise', 'modernise' or be 'unique'. Personally, I prefer Marie.
To use Maree, I would spell it Marée and use the French pronunciation, which is gorgeous imo.
