King: Kieran Robert Constantine Laurence, His Royal Highness King Kieran (26)
Queen Consort: Elisabeth Gloria Rose, Her Royal Highness Queen Elisabeth (21)
-DPrincess: Helena Margaret Caitriona Rose, Her Royal Highness Princess Helena
Of the Royal House of Covedale, of the kingdom of Bellemar
King Kieran and Queen Elisabeth have welcomed their first child this year, a daughter. The baby girl is healthy and lovely, with Elisabeth's pale hair and Kieran's deep blue eyes. Though Kieran wants a son as soon as possible to serve as his heir, he is content with knowing that his wife can bear him healthy and beautiful children. Elisabeth, for her part, is overjoyed with her infant daughter and was very pleased that her firstborn was a daughter, though she hopes sons will come soon after.
Kieran and Elisabeth are proving to be rather a distant couple. Kieran is eternally calm and difficult to rile, and no one in the palace has heard the young monarch so much as raise his voice since he was a child. Elisabeth, on the the other hand, is excitable and quick to emotion, either good or bad. Kieran stays inside most days, reading, studying, or fulfilling his kingly duties and his excursions are usually falconing or hikes and are very often undertaken in solitude. Elisabeth loves the outdoors and spends much of her time in the garden, resenting the rain when it coops her up in the thick walls. She is constantly surrounded by her ladies-in-waiting, talking and laughing. She doesn't understand Kieran's steadiness and quiet passion, and finds him to be rather cooler a husband than she desired. Kieran is often distracted by Elisabeth's girly antics, and wishes he could have a deep conversation with his wife. He wants to be closer to her, but doesn't truly know how to do that.
Though they maintain separate chambers, the King and Queen share a group of rooms lavishly decorated with Bellemar's famous textiles and furniture. They took each others' beds shortly after Coronation and Elisabeth was soon with child. The Kingdom held its breath, waiting to see if their young and delicate new Queen could bring them noble young princes. As Elisabeth's belly swelled, Kieran's reign began to pick up steam as he began to differentiate himself from stalwart, battle-loving father. He was soon bolstering trade and offering more incentive to skilled workers who would train young people in the textile and crafting trades that had given Bellemar its fame. Gold flowed into the kingdom, and the people were happy to be so prosperous and to begin not only repairing war damages, but improving beyond what they had had before.
More controversial, however, was Kieran's compulsory education decree, which requires all boys, regardless of social status, to be taught to read, and all merchant or noble boys to attend school or be privately tutored through their tenth year. There was quite a bit of grumbling about this law. Who would teach their babes to read when they could barely read at all? Who would replace their children's hands in the home, in the field, in the shop, while they were off learning such frivolous tricks? The nobility was unaffected by the decree, since most already tutored their children, and the merchant class was for the most part glad to educate their children. The lower classes grumbled though, and continue to grumble, as towns search for people to teach their children to read.
In the midst of the grumbling, Elisabeth gave birth to the royal couple's first child. They named the baby Helena, after a traditional Bellemarian heroine, Margaret, after Elisabeth's mother, Caitriona, after Queen Catherine (whose name before her betrothal to the late king had been Caitriona), and Rose, as a nod to Elisabeth's own name. The kingdom is happy to see healthy royal children and the unrest about literacy has died down a bit in light of the royal birth.
Like most of peers, Kieran is not very involved in the day-to-day care of his baby daughter. He stops into to hold her and smile and coo at her every day or every other day, and then returns to his duties. Elisabeth lets the nursemaids do the grunt work, but for the first few months has insisted on feeding the babe herself, and spends hours a day in the nursery with the infant. Word among the nursemaids is that she won't be like this for much longer and certainly not for any of her later children. The sentimental nature of new mothers!
