Background: Vince first met Valerie on an assignment for the local news station’s evening program. He was a newly minted anchor, mere months into his job, and she had recently graduated from law school. Valerie had won a pivotal case to protect Maori land rights, and Vince was supposed to cover a press conference in which she discussed the landslide accomplishment. After the conference, she and Vince struck up a conversation, in which she revealed plans to run for city council on a platform of humanitarianism and conservationism. Vince was smitten, asked her out for dinner, and the rest was history.
Year 1: Although Vince and Val have been dating for six years, each is too hesitant to propose marriage. Finally, Vince’s father Edward approaches his son, exasperated. “Look,” Ed says, “you love her. Your mum and I love her too, and would hate to see her go. For God’s sake, Vince, snatch her up before she slips away.” Ed was never an emotional man, so Vince takes his father’s sudden, sentimental words to heart. He decides to propose, but knows he needs an unconventional idea to convince Val. So, he purchases a cockatiel, trains it to say “Marry Me!” and ties a simple gold band around its leg. Finally, Vince shows the bird to Val. When it squawks its proposal, she tears up and accepts. Vince and Val marry three months later in a seaside ceremony.

At 35 weeks gestation, Val births Eloise Rachel and James William, who come home after a week in the NICU. Both twins look like Daddy, with blonde hair and brown eyes.
