Background: Vince first met Valerie on an assignment for the local news station’s evening program. He was a newly minted anchor, mere months into his job, and she had recently graduated from law school. Valerie had won a pivotal case to protect Maori land rights, and Vince was supposed to cover a press conference in which she discussed the landslide accomplishment. After the conference, she and Vince struck up a conversation, in which she revealed plans to run for city council on a platform of humanitarianism and conservationism. Vince was smitten, asked her out for dinner, and the rest was history.
Year 1: Although Vince and Val have been dating for six years, each is too hesitant to propose marriage. Finally, Vince’s father Edward approaches his son, exasperated. “Look,” Ed says, “you love her. Your mum and I love her too, and would hate to see her go. For God’s sake, Vince, snatch her up before she slips away.” Ed was never an emotional man, so Vince takes his father’s sudden, sentimental words to heart. He decides to propose, but knows he needs an unconventional idea to convince Val. So, he purchases a cockatiel, trains it to say “Marry Me!” and ties a simple gold band around its leg. Finally, Vince shows the bird to Val. When it squawks its proposal, she tears up and accepts. Vince and Val marry three months later in a seaside ceremony.
DH: Vince (31); DW: Val (33)
Pet: Cockatiel, “Skeeter”
Year 2: Val wants to begin a large family of her own. Not surprisingly, she grew up in a large family with four brothers and two sisters. Vince supports Val’s desire to conceive, but is flabbergasted to learn that she is pregnant with twins! Although Vince is shocked, Val expected it; twins run in her family. In fact, her brothers Paul and Simon were just one set of many twins throughout her extended family. At 35 weeks gestation, Val births Eloise Rachel and James William, who come home after a week in the NICU. Both twins look like Daddy, with blonde hair and brown eyes.
DH: Vince (32); DW: Val (34)
DD/DS: Eloise and James (nb)
Pet: Cockatiel, “Skeeter”
Year 3: As part of an assignment on New Zealand’s educational system, Vince’s boss asks him to report comparisons between schools in other countries. Vince welcomes a Korean exchange student into his home for the school year, hoping to get a first person account of these academic differences. The student, named Hyun, proves to be an invaluable resource for Vince’s report and for his family. Hyun introduces the Chandlers to pickled Korean cuisine and K-Pop. When the school year draws to a close, the Chandlers are sad to see Hyun go, but agree to continual correspondence.
DH: Vince (33); DW: Val (35)
DD/DS: Eloise and James (1)
Pet: Cockatiel, “Skeeter”
Year 4: Now that the twins are rambunctious toddlers, the Chandlers feel that they have outgrown their home. They decide to move across town, settling in an established neighborhood mere minutes from Vince’s parents. The new home has more property and more bedrooms, and so the Chandlers think of expanding their family again.
DH: Vince (34); DW: Val (36)
DD/DS: Eloise and James (2)
Pet: Cockatiel, “Skeeter”
Year 5: With no new baby in sight, Vince and Val feel that the house needs an extra member. They ask the twins if they should purchase a new pet. The answer is a resounding “YES! YES! PLEASE, MOMMY! YES!”, but the twins will only agree to two turtles. Concerns of salmonella aside, the Chandlers bring home two turtles for Christmas. The twins name them Ella and Jimmy, after themselves.
DH: Vince (35); DW: Val (37)
DD/DS: Eloise and James (3)
Pet: Cockatiel, “Skeeter”; Turtles “Ella” and “Jimmy”
Year 6: Val’s biological clock has nearly reached midnight, and she feels that her childbearing years have expired. Thus, she is pleasantly surprised to miss a period at Christmastime. And to think, she thought she’d be stuck with turtles! This time, Val gives birth to a single child - Lily Faith - whose peculiar looks bring the family a mix of puzzlement and joy. Lily has red hair and blue eyes, a combination that Val has only seen in her own mother.
DH: Vince (36); DW: Val (38)
DD/DS: Eloise and James (4); DD: Lily (nb)
Pet: Cockatiel, “Skeeter”; Turtles “Ella” and “Jimmy”
Year 7: Vince does a news report on international adoption, leading him to interview families who had previously adopted children. He meets the Finleys, a family with three sons who had been adopted from Vietnam over an eight year period. The Finleys explain that their youngest son, five-year old Matthew, was actually brought home during the previous year. After meeting the Finleys and considering Vals’ desire to further expand the family, Vince feels inspired to consider adoption. Val agrees to begin the adoption process; they bring home 3-year old Mai Lorraine in October.
DH: Vince (37); DW: Val (39)
DD/DS: Eloise and James (5); DD: Mai (3); DD: Lily (1)
Pet: Cockatiel, “Skeeter”; Turtles “Ella” and “Jimmy”
Year 8: The Chandlers prepare to accept another pair of twins into their family – but no, Val is not pregnant again. They have pursued a second adoption from Vietnam, where they are matched with identical twin girls, born in November of the previous year. Vince and Val welcome home Tien Maris and Thuy Maeve when the girls are 9 months old.

DD/DS: Eloise and James (6); DD: Mai (4); DD: Lily (2); DD/DD: Tien and Thuy (9 mos)
Pet: Cockatiel, “Skeeter”; Turtles “Ella” and “Jimmy”
Year 9: After 15 years on the city council, Val wants a break. She decides not to run for re-election, and vows to spend a few years at home with her son and daughters.

DD/DS: Eloise and James (7); DD: Mai (5); DD: Lily (3); DD/DD: Tien and Thuy (1)

Year 10: The Chandlers think that their family is complete, but Mother Nature has different plans. Val conceives for a fourth time, giving birth to Nessa Marine in December. She has blonde hair and brown eyes, just like her father, James, and Eloise. Everyone is excited to have a new baby sister.
