John and Kathleen were beginning to grow accustomed to their new life in America when Kathleen started feeling extremely homesick. She was beginning to feel lonely, as she rarely ever got to see John, much less spend any time with him due to both of their work schedules. When John's cousin Thomas decided to expand the hotel and hire more staff, it resulted in John getting a minor promotion, a benefit of which was every Saturday off. Kathleen still had a grueling all day schedule, but it didn't take long for Kathleen to discover she was pregnant. John refused to allow her to work at all during her pregnancy, and Thomas agreed to pay her a small percentage of her previous wages despite the fact that she would remain in her and John's quarters.
Kathleen was overjoyed when she gave birth to a beautiful, healthy baby girl. Her and John decided to name her Elizabeth after Kathleen's older sister Eilis, and Mary after Kathleen's younger sister Maire.
