Hmm I guess you could claim it's the English pronunciation of the French girls name Valentine. After all we pronounce Sophie as SO-fee whereas in France it's so-FEE and there are other examples as well.
Joan Valentine is very cool, by the way. I also really love Clare (only spelled like this).
