I know it's a name, I'm just not sure what the correct pronunciation is. I had believed it was "bay-ARD" but I've heard it said like "BAY-erd" too - which I'm cool with, that's close enough to Baird for me anyway, I'm just not as fond of the emphasized "ARD." If the majority of people are inclined to pronounce it "BAY-erd" that's good news to me :)

It's a minor one in Britain. Maybe it's from the last name. I'm not sure. But I've always thought of it as a title, like thane, earl, etc. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baird_baronets
