I love Maxine and if my husband's brother wasn't named Max I would probably let myself come to love it even more. One of my best friends when I was preschool aged was named Maxine and she had red hair and was very artistic. My other good friend at the time was Stella whose mother is named Maxine.
Maxine makes me think of French or American counterculture girls and women. It seems like the name of an artist either an edgy punk vibe or a colorful wild Bohemian vibe or maybe a quiet sweet head-in-the-clouds vibe like Luna Lovegood. I think it easily is a usable name, for one at its peak in 1923 it was only a slightly common name #76 and .288% so it shouldn't feel very dated.
I grew up with my parents often talking about their friends and their punk days, sadly a lot of their friends died very young from AIDS most before I was born. One of my parents best friends who died before I was born was a musician who was good friend's with the famous punk artist Xene so they used to sometimes party with her when she visited Seattle. They had an old band poster with Xene on it framed on our wall.
The name Xene has always reminded me of Maxine because of their similarity of sound and because Stella's mother Maxine was a marginally famous punk model and punk fashion designer/ stylist and Stella's birth father was a very famous punk rock musician. Not related but Stella is now a famous model and fashion designer/ stylist herself, she is much more famous than her mother was. Her style is a mix of punk, kitsch, vintage, lolita, and harajuku. She goes by her full name Stella Rose Saint Clair, but I always think of her as Stella St. Clair which is what she went by in middle and high school.
