There was a native American Indian whose name was Sequoyah. He was a Cherokee. (I think they named the trees after him, possibly.) It makes me think of a male name because of this. I don't really care for it as a name for a boy or a girl, though. Sorry!

It's debatable if the species of tree is named for him or not.
I really think more people are familiar with the trees and national park than the native american linguist though. And as such, it's certainly perfectly valid as a girl's name. :)
