While Alexandra, Felix, and Clara are away at boarding schools, a tuberculosis outbreak strikes their town. Their parents and older sister, Emma, are afflicted by the disease, and by the time news reaches the two schools, they are already gone, and the children are instructed to stay at the school so they do not contract the illness. When the school breaks for the summer, Alexandra graduates, and returns home with her younger brother and sister. Soon after they return, Alexandra marries a young man named Charles, so her siblings can be provided for. She just had her first baby, a son named Leopold, known to most as Leo.
