People were not actually naming their kids Baby. A few did, probably, but very few. What happened is that babies were registered with the SSA before they had a legal name and "baby" is a place holder. If you go back earlier than the nineties, especially in the earliest popularity lists, you will see "names" like Baby, Female, Boy, and Unknown. In the mid-20th century you'll see "Brain." This doesn't mean anyone was going around being called Unknown; it just meant the baby's name was not known when the birth was registered or the SS number was assigned. And in the case of Brain, that's just a typoed Brian.Before you criticize a man, walk a mile in his shoes. That way, when you criticize him, you're a mile away and you have his shoes!
