I cannot remember which reference work I got the "good/desirable" meaning from (some of these entries were written so long ago) but presumably it is meant to come from the Greek comparative λωιων or loion which meant "more desirable, more agreeable, better".
Pavlos, any thoughts as to whether this actually holds any weight?
